CHAPTER 23

“Hi, baby,” Delilah replied to Nathaniel. She was so attractive she could have been the model for all the clothing in this shop and any other. Her teeth shone against her smooth brown skin, and her only blemish was a small mole next to her left eye. On anyone else, the mole would simply be called a mole, but on her it was a beauty mark. She stood upright as Nathaniel planted a kiss on her lips.

“Don’t come distractin’ my sistah, Nathaniel Lee. We got plenty work to do and barely time to do it!” Phyllis chirped. She was not as striking as Delilah but was naturally attractive. If Phyllis had worn just touches of makeup, she would have been as eye catching as Delilah. Phyllis glowed as she laughed with Nathaniel.

Nana raised her eyebrows and smiled widely. She pulled Kenny’s arm to lower him to her. “We used to do this awl the time. He don’t ever get mad, no matter what I say to him. Watch this,” she whispered into Kenny’s ear.

“Don’t be jealous. You ain’t let nobody pay you no attention. My brothers done gave up on yuh,” Nathaniel responded quickly as if he was ready for any of Phyllis’s barbs.

“And I gave up on dem a long time ago. If they was worth it, I’d bother, but I ain’t goin’ through no trouble over dem,” Phyllis said after a chuckle.

“Nathaniel, honey, where are your mannus? Who is your cump’ny?” asked Delilah. She had been smiling after kissing Nathaniel. She was clearly accustomed to his playful sparring with Phyllis.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I met ’em on my delivery to the Hotel James. This is Nana Ashford and Kenny Ashford.” Nathaniel removed his hat as he turned and made the introduction.

Kenny walked to the counter and shook hands with the sisters. He had been watching Delilah as she interacted with Nathaniel and had to avert his gaze after shaking her hand. This beautiful woman was the soul within the lonely and confused little girl who had been reaching out to him since he was a child. He sensed within the woman the power that would manifest as a little girl in his dreams. And she would do this from a dark time-space beyond his imagination.

Such an ability would make her a legend if it was known.

Kenny suddenly realized he was thinking of her with special powers like one of his patients or their family members who perceived him as a miracle worker. They looked upon him in awe as the one who would rid them or their loved ones of demons no one could see, demons that consumed people’s minds and hearts easily and sometimes eternally.

He was attributing to Delilah similar legendary qualities.

He noticed Nana had stood up and was walking toward them before he realized she was doing so. When he moved toward her with an extended hand, she shooed him away.

“I was sayin’ how lovely yo’ shop is. How long y’all been heah?” Nana asked sweetly as she took Delilah’s hand above the counter.
